CORNIGLIA
THE NAME IS
PRONOUNCED CORE-KNEEL-YA AND IT IS THE NEXT TOWN SOUTH ALONG THE
CINQUE TERRE. THIS IS THE HILLTOWN OF THE GROUP. IT HAS A
SMALL
HARBOR BUT IT IS NOT
CONTIGUOUS TO THE MAIN PART OF THE TOWN.
IT HAS FEWER SHOPS
SO IT ATTRACTS LESS OF THE TOURIST
TRADE MAKING IT A MUCH MORE PLACID LITTLE PLACE. I DON'T THINK
THERE ARE ANY COMMERCIAL HOTELS HERE, I COULD BE WRONG, BUT THERE ARE
VARIOUS
ROOMS TO BE RENTED IN PRIVATE HOMES. |

A
typical trail view near Corniglia. The red and white markings on
the rock at the right indicate this is an official trail per the CAI,
an Italian hiking association.

Life is
fairly easy in Corniglia - this is on a central piazza.

|

|
To reach Corniglia from the south
(including from the railway station) one
must climb 370-some steps. I am getting near the top in the right
photo.

MANAROLA
|
NUMBER FOUR GOING DOWN THE
LINE, MANAROLA IS SURROUNDED BY VINES, BISECTED BY A STREAM, WITH THE
MAIN VILLAGE LOCATED DIRECTLY ON THE SEA. A NUMBER OF SHOPS ARE
LOCATED IN THE LOWER PART OF THE TOWN, IN THE UPPER PART YOU COULD
VISIT THE CHURCH OF SAN LORENZO, DATING TO 1338, WITH IT'S FAMOUS ROSE
WINDOW WHICH DATES INTO THE 14TH CENTURY.

The town was just completing installation
of this new aquatic life themed
ceramic tile mosaic at their central piazza. The detail of the
tiles
was incredible.
