Hana Odds 'n Ends

Hana nightlife is essentially non-existant but we found one exception.  On Sunday nights the
Hotel Hana Maui puts on a show of traditional dancing by local native dancers, and there
isn't even a charge.  Hawaiians are working hard to retain their native culture.  There was a
moderate charge for the delicious Mai Tai's.

Hasegawa's General Store, a Hana icon

The way I heard it, "if Hasegawa's doesn't have it, you don't need it."  Perhaps so, the store is amazing in the number of things it carries.  Think of a Wal*Mart Super Store in a closet, that's a good comparison to Hasegawa's.  You will find a mention of the store in every tourist guide about Hana, and they even had a song written about them; the lyrics are in the right column.

Hasegawa's General Store

The store was originally built in 1910, next to their existing gas station, by two Hasegawa brothers.  It soon became a community staple.  The original store burned to the ground in 1990 also destroying the gas station.  The family renovated the former home of the Hana movie theatre and reopened a general store there in 1991.  That is the store we saw when we visited.

Plans are in the works at this time to rebuild on the original store site.  Three generations of Hasegawa's work in the store today.

Lyrics to the song
Hasegawa's General Store

On the island of Maui
Far from Waikiki
There's a place called Hana
That is heavenly

And when you go there
You've got to see
The Hasegawa General Store

As you walk through the doorway
What a great surprise
There's a wonderful
Variety of merchandise

It's all spread out there
Before your eyes
At the Hasegawa General Store

They've got a baseball hat
A paniolo hat
Sunburn creams
And the latest magazines
Muu muus, mangos and ukuleles too
And even hamburger for a malahini like you

They say a cheerful 'aloha' when you first go by
And a sweet 'mahalo nui' when you say 'bye-bye'
You can't resist it, once you try
The Hasegawa General Store

You've gotta walk very slowly
As your tour begins
Through those pineapples, cereals and bobby pins
Spears and goggles and swimming fins
At the Hasegawa General Store

Now if you want to lama lama
They've got kerosene
If you want to lomi lomi
They've got rubbing cream
Some guava jelly that's just supreme
At the Hasegawa General Store

They've got kukui nuts
Assorted cold cuts
Surfer's pants
And papaya plants
A shiny koa calabash
To catch your eye
Some okolehao
When your throat gets dry

So if you're ever in Hana
With some time to spare
You've got to holo holo
Down to you-know-where

You just name it
They've got it there
At the Hasegawa General Store.

Red Sand beach Melody in the surf at Red Sand
A pleasant morning walk brought us to an excellent snorkeling spot, Red Sand Beach.
Red Sand is noted in ALL the guide books as the only clothing-optional beach in the area.
Did anyone.........??  I can only say that yes, there were naked people in the immediate area.

And, on the road back from Hana to the Kahului area:

Taro growing area
Surf at Ho'okipa beach park
Several fields of taro are growing below us
Wind-whipped surf at Ho'okipa beach park
