| I mentioned earlier that our trip was
a service trip. On the Hana side of the island we got to do our service work
at the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala [volcano] National Park which
is south of Hana along the coast.
We broke up into four groups in order to work in different areas. One group cleared bamboo which was overgrowing a trail, another swept and raked fallen debris from a well-used path and another did housecleaning in a Park Service barracks (according to an anonymous source it appeared the place had not been cleaned since about World War II). I was teamed with Richard, Terry and Carol whom we coaxed out of the kitchen with promises that this would be fun. Our job was to clear a spot along the "main" highway so the Park Service could put up a fancy new sign telling motorists that they were entering the park. The area was totally overgrown with many kinds of vegetation which was fully concealing a rock wall about 10' off the road. We endured scorching sun, biting bugs and 90 MPH traffic at our backs (on that road?) to get the job done. The photos below show something of the before, during and after. |
