The beginning......

For reference, this map shows Maui and the two major areas of interest for our trip.

The major airport on Maui is located in Kahului and many of us spent at least one night
prior to the trip at the Maui Seaside Hotel. It really was "seaside," adjacent to the
Kahului harbor, the views below were from the hotel grounds.

tiny port for the day.

On the 11th the group "formally" met, loaded up vans, and headed
for Hana at the east end of the island.  I think it was fair to say we
were quite pleased upon seeing our accommodations for the next
few nights, the Hana Kai Maui Resort condos.

The picture immediately below shows a corner of the resort with
our "command central" room visible.

The Hana area was settled by Polynesians somewhere between 500 and 800 A.D.  Within a few hundred years Hana was the home to one of the three kingdoms on the island.  Several centuries later the fabled leader Piilani emerged from Hana.  He managed to somewhat peacefully unite the several kingdoms into one for the island as King Kamehameha would later do for all of the islands.

In more recent history sugar plantations played a big part in Hana's history until the last of them closed in 1946.  Today Hana retains a small town charm, it has resisted the giant condominium projects seen in other parts of the islands.

Executive trip chef Lynne (r. above) prepares part of our first meal in Hana, oriental noodles and something (sorry Lynne).  Lynne is a seasoned veteran of many Sierra Club trips as either a trip leader or chef.

Assisting her, in the orange top, is Carol who was a last minute draftee as assistant executive chef.  This was her first Sierra Club trip in any capacity.  Her experience in restaurant management prepared her well for us "difficult customers."

Delicious meals were the rule throughout the trip.

In the photos below the meal is being enjoyed in the living
room of "command central" and on the lanai.
